While we heal the wounds from coronavirus and its variants, experts predict yet another global migraine in 2022 – a food crisis, and Africa could be a major victim. But the messiah is here.
BNN Bloomberg reports that “Prices of synthetic fertilizer, which rely on natural gas and coal as raw materials, have soared amid an energy shortage and export restrictions by Russia and China.” Essentially, chemical fertilizer is in short supply globally; prices have gone up, and farmers will not have enough fertilizer to produce target food quantity come 2022
In Africa, the shortage seems to be a more dangerous threat to food security. Food production success has always depended on chemical fertilizer use. And now, farmers are frustrated. Citi Newsroom reports that in Sissala District, the shortage of fertilizer is adversely affecting farmers, leaving large fields of maize turning yellowish a few weeks after planting. 65-year old Mr Batong Iddrisu could cultivate only 5 out of 15 acres of his land, while Madam Issifu Damata at Tumu feared abandoning her 42-acre maize field, which she has already ploughed. That is hard earned money and hard labour going to waste, all because of a global shortage of chemical fertilizer.
BUT, what if all this is no issue at all? What if a global fertilizer shortage is not a threat to our food security? What if farmers can actually give us MORE than enough food at half the cost of fertilizer? This may sound like a funny dream. But hold your breath, because it’s about to get real.
